Washington Studio School offers high-school teens a number of opportunities to study art and develop their portfolios. In addition to our summer program, high-school teens are welcome to enroll in our weekend drawing and painting classes, and are encouraged to contact us to discuss appropriate levels for their studies at WSS.

Each summer in July, WSS offers an intensive program in drawing, painting and sculpture. Our program is carefully constructed to give motivated students the opportunity for concentrated and rigorous work in the visual arts — with an emphasis on drawing. Students are exposed to art from ancient to contemporary times, and the program includes structured visits to a museum and an artist’s studio. These students work hard and have fun together! All of our instructors are practicing artists with extensive experience in teaching.

Drawing

Each day of the core session begins with a full three hour morning of observational drawing. Students will work from challenging and dynamic still life arrangements, interior space, the figure model, and the urban landscape. A variety of materials and techniques will be explored, from traditional to contemporary. Our goals will be mastering elements of line, shape, value, composition, and the translation of observed 3-D forms into a believable 2-D sense of space.

Painting

Weeks 1 and 2 will be spent painting primarily with acrylic on canvas, although a mixed media project may be included as well. Students will build on their morning drawing skills by learning to articulate form, space and movement through paint. Working properties of paint, color theory, and composition will all be included. Work will be from still life, figure and weather permitting, the landscape.

Printmaking

Week 3 will introduce students to different methods of monotype printing. Printmaking will be incorporated into both the drawing and painting components of the week, and will utilize non-toxic materials to explore additive and subtractive techniques.

Lunch

There will be an hour lunch break. Students may bring their lunch and eat at the school, or grab a bite at one of the nearby carry-out places (The Newsroom, Bethesda Bagel, Teaism, etc.). Faculty will always be available for students’ needs.

* Materials: WSS will provide students with drawing paper, charcoal, pencils, paints, canvases, brushes, clay, easels, erasers and more. Lockers available.
