Spontaneity of Clay Sculpture, Part I: 3-D Figure Sculpture (5weeks/Online)
Instructor: Jon Joseph-Russo
January 27, February 3, 10, 17, 24
Wednesdays, 2-5 pm EST
This 2-Part course explores the fluidity of clay utilizing optional subjects: the figure from a model, self-portraits, still life, and working from Master Artist images. Processes covered are 3D to relief, then 2D to relief (which will include transcribing Modern Master paintings such as Matisse, Braque) and develop interpretations of spatial compression (foreshortened perspective) which is especially useful for painting/drawing. There will be a gestural approach to the full figure and an opportunity to do head studies.
Introduction to clay tools, techniques and demonstrations will be included.
Working from reference photos of a figure model from many views, students will produce sculptures from both a reclining pose and a seated pose. The rotation of the shared image views will replicate the rotation of the model in the classroom. Concepts of gesture, contour, proportion, weight, negative and positive space, and how light defines planes will be covered.
