This advanced painting class will emphasize research and personal direction. Advanced students will dive into a deeper exploration of the emphatic mark, and what it means to work with oil paint as a medium, to push your practice in a direction that reflects who you are as an artist and what you want to say. Historical and perceptual references will act as a starting point for paintings as students continue to grapple with formal principles of composition and markmaking. Students will work from setups as well as their own sources with exercises designed to explore broader possibilities available to them through in-depth exploration of paint manipulation.
This class is for painters who have developed skills in painting, have an understanding of visual elements, and are ready to paint outside of the ”student” box.

NOTE: Gesso Day is January 6TH. Join us at WSS between 2-6pm, to learn how to stretch and gesso your own canvases and prepare surfaces for the upcoming term! RSVP is required to attend.

If you are unsure if a class is right for you, please read our Pathway To Sucess: A Guide or have a conversation with a Faculty member or our Head of Faculty before the first week of the 10-week term ends. Once the second week of classes starts, no refunds will be offered.
For Workshops, Artist Demos, and Short Classes (classes less than 10 weeks in duration) - only withdrawals more than 14 days before the first day of class – 100% tuition refund*
A $25 administrative fee is applied to all refunds.
