Before and After Ninth Street - At the Museum
Instructor: Jo Weiss
Sundays, October 13 through November 17, 1-4pm
With the five painters featured in Mary Gabriel’s remarkably researched ‘Ninth Street Women’ as the linchpin, this combination art history, art appreciation, and hands on drawing class will look at the artistic and historical milieu before, during and after their working years. The class will meet at museums around the city to view and discuss the work of Lee Krasner, Elaine deKooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell and Helen Frankenthaler within the context of other painters whose work they were reacting to, including possibly old and modern masters. The five painters will be the springboard, but not necessarily the sole focus of the class. Sketchbook transcriptions and dissections of work in the museums will be a big part of this class. Conversations about the relationship of art to historical context will also take place.
While related thematically to the ‘Ninth Street on S Street’ class, the two can be taken concurrently to supplement each other, or as completely independent offerings. The reading of ‘Ninth Street Women’ is optional, but some familiarity with the five painters and the Abstract Expressionist painters they worked amongst is helpful.
