Beginning Drawing - Section 2

Instructor: Carol Rubin

Wednesdays, 10am - 1pm

This introductory class emphasizes seeing and the principles of drawing from observation. Using simple drawing materials such as charcoal, pencil and ink on paper, students will gain an understanding of how to use line, shape and value to articulate space and form. Each of the three academic terms (Fall, Winter and Spring) has a slightly different emphasis, making it possible to study the foundations slowly and in depth over the course of the year.  Fall - line; Winter - shape/value; and Spring - space/composition).

Skills that will be introduced to different degrees each term include:

  • Visual measurement,
  • proportion,
  • line quality,
  • contour,
  • value (light/dark) relationships and how they find form,
  • negative/positive shapes,
  • figure/ground relationship,
  • basic perspective,
  • seeing angles, planes and gesture,
  • as well as strategies for creating space and compositional unity.

The class will work from still life, interior space and the figure model.

Who is this class for: This class is for those totally new to drawing from observation as well as those who want to refresh their fundamental skills in seeing and drawing from life.
