Emphasizing the continued refinement of perceptual drawing skills, this course concentrates on the structure, movement, and expressive qualities of the figure. Students work towards a personal sensibility through a variety of drawing materials.
A combination of short gestural poses and longer studies will be included. Some time will be spent with the portrait, hands, and feet, as well as possible multiple-figure compositions.

⢠Gravity

Who is this class for? While students new to drawing the human figure are welcome, this class is for students with some prior drawing experience and does not serve as an introduction to drawing.
Materials List - These are the materials you will need for this class. Please prepare for this class by putting together your drawing kit and being ready to draw on the first day of class.
Materials specific to this class, recommended by Samantha Stover:
â˘Large Newsprint Pad 18x24, 50 or 100 sheets (Canson, Strathmore, or equivalent).
⢠Charcoal, various: willow, vine, compressed, and/or powdered.
⢠Optional for Color: Prismacolor Nupastel Sticks (Recommended: 48-box or 24-box. I use 96, but that is not necessary.)
⢠Generalâs Compressed Charcoal & White Charcoal Pencils
⢠Kneaded Eraser and a White Plastic Eraser
⢠Sandpaper and razor-blade for sharpening chalks and pencils
⢠Any other drawing materials with which you are comfortable for sketching
⢠Optional colored paper (Canson Mi- teintes, tan kraft paper, Strathmore 500 âCharcoalâ, etc.)
WSS Standard Supply List for Drawing Classes:
- 18âx24â white bond drawing paper 70lb or heavier
- Box of soft vine charcoal
- Box of soft compressed charcoal (Charkole)
- Kneaded eraser
- Staedtler white plastic eraser
- Pencils: 2H, 2B, 4B, 6B
- Paper Towels - for personal use while drawing
Optional items:
- Reed pen
- Sable brush (watercolor brush)
- Black ink Black
- Sanguine conte crayon
- Chamois cloth

If you are unsure if a class is right for you, please read our Pathway To Sucess: A Guide or have a conversation with a Faculty member or our Head of Faculty before the first week of the 10-week term ends. Once the second week of classes starts, no refunds will be offered.
For Workshops, Artist Demos, and Short Classes (classes less than 10 weeks in duration) - only withdrawals more than 14 days before the first day of class â 100% tuition refund*
A $25 administrative fee is applied to all refunds.
