Instructor: Mary Freedman
This foundation class for intermediate students introduces and furthers the study of the techniques and formal language of drawing through observation. Working from still life, interior space and the figure, students increase their understanding of the basic principles of drawing three-dimensional form in space. Studies in line, shape, value, proportion, and positive/negative space are deepened as a means to understand principles such as:
- and unity.
Addressed also are perceptual issues regarding the mark, gesture, planes, and placement on the page, as well as a strengthened understanding of the figure as form in space. Basic drawing materials such as charcoal, graphite and ink may be enhanced by the use of some collage or chalk. The foundation classes are run for the full academic year with a different focus each term.
Who is this class for: This class is best for those with some previous basic drawing experience and understanding of visual elements who want to deepen their skills and begin to move towards a more personal voice.
