Painting the Landscape 1: Inspired by Matisse (Outdoors)

Instructor: Trevor Young

July 12 - August 2 (four weeks)

Sundays, 2 - 5 pm EST

This onsite plein air class will take place at various locations in the DC area.  It is divided into two four week segments inspired by two different painters, and can be taken independently or as a whole. Those who take both will experience two distinct ways of observing and working from the landscape, benefitting from the absorption and extraction of both.  Part 1 focuses on Matisse and the instinctive, spontaneous and expressive way of working.  His color speaks to his emotional response to the natural world, and sometimes required changing that color to better depict that emotional.  Students will need a portable easel, and while it is a painting class, those who prefer to draw with color are welcome to do so.

The class will meet at Peirce Mill in Rock Creek Park near Tilden Road.
