Experience the National Gallery of Art with purpose. Examine methods and painting techniques used by master artists from the past including Dutch, late Renaissance, and mid-18th century French painters. By learning various methods of staging and approaches to painting (glazing, tinting, transparency), students will develop work that combines philosophical approaches and new techniques to their work. The instructor will demonstrate how to incorporate the methods used by these artists such as layering techniques, detailed marks, and palette construction. Students will learn how to develop references, take notes, and make drawings from the works in the museum to bring a sense of light and freshness to their paintings.
This class will meet both at the National Gallery of Art and at the Washington Studio School. The first two classes will meet at the Cascade Café at the National Gallery of Art.
- Please do not bring backpacks or liquids into the museums.
