Sketching on Location combines art history, figure drawing, plein air, composition design, and how to effectively record sight-seeing and memories into a sketchbook or small portfolio. In this class, we will tour DC museums and monuments, urban sketch in public spaces, and explore some of the city’s most visually stimulating attractions. We will meet in a different location each week (Art Museums, cafés, gardens, etc) to sketch statues, people, architecture, art, plants, animals, or anything else in view that captures your fancy! After the initial meetup and instruction, you can choose to sketch in a group, in pairs, or solo – and we will meet back to share our sketches in a casual group-critique format. Locations will include favorite DC area monuments, museums, and outdoor attractions. Your instructor will communicate the week-to-week meeting places.
Materials List - These are the materials you will need for this class. Please bring everything you need with you to each week's class.
Sketchbook or Paper with a rigid backing board (such as foam core)
Your Sketching materials of choice (appropriate to location)
Spring clip(s)/ Binder clips
Personal items as needed (such as a Hat & SPF; Water bottle; Snack)
Consider carrying only a small shoulder tote – We will pre-research location-specific information on handbag allowance, checking bags, etc.
Comfortable shoes, of course!

If you are unsure if a class is right for you, please read our Pathway To Sucess: A Guide or have a conversation with a Faculty member or our Head of Faculty before the first week of the 10-week term ends. Once the second week of classes starts, no refunds will be offered.
For Workshops, Artist Demos, and Short Classes (classes less than 10 weeks in duration) - only withdrawals more than 14 days before the first day of class – 100% tuition refund*
A $25 administrative fee is applied to all refunds.
*If we can fill your spot, we will fully refund your tuition, less the administrative fee.
