Transcription Alchemy: An Art Appreciation Seminar (3weeks/Online)
Instructor: Jo Weiss
January 26, February 9 and 23
Alternate Tuesdays, 7-9 pm EST
Almost all artists have at one time, or another, copied from their predecessors as a way to communicate with their influencers and glean from them the secrets of their strengths.
This class will examine a number of different artists spanning a broad period of time, purposes and cultures. Side by side, we can view what it was the copier was working towards and how they may have used the copies as springboards in their own work. A transcription is more than a copy, it is looking at sources for thematic material as well as the poetry of arrangement and technique; it is a method of learning a system, testing it, and working for what is out of reach.
