Working in Series

Instructor: Jill Phillips

Tuesdays, 7-10pm

The series is an important concept in the history of modernist painting. It replaces the idea of the single, definitive masterpiece with the idea of variations on a theme.  Artists create series because they are curious individuals. The generative process that takes place in the studio means that one piece leads to another – with one question provoking the next.  In this class, students will work towards a small series, discovering how the studio operates like a laboratory with constants and variables allowing for pictorial possibilities and deep explorations.  By looking at the work of modern and contemporary painters we will see how liberating it can be to explore within set limitations,, and how far a series can be pushed. Work will begin from observation, and attention to visual elements and principles of design with be strong.   Through drawing, collage and paint, we will ask questions that lead to shifts in emphasis, format, use of materials, color and more, allowing responses to unfold in series in ways that could not have been predicted.

Who is this class for: This class is for students with some previous drawing and painting experience who are looking to push their seeing and mark-making into more personal and inventive ways, as well as to be guided in asking questions that will move their work from one piece to the next.
