Volunteer

Washington Studio School’s (WSS) mission is to teach the visual language and the skills essential to developing and expressing a personal vision through classes, workshops, exhibitions and programs. WSS serves almost 4,000 District-area residents, welcomes an average of 300 students (and growing), and offers more than 60 free programs to students and the general public annually. WSS is seeking enthusiastic individuals to join our small but dedicated team of board of directors, staff, work-study participants and volunteers.

If you are interested in becoming involved in the arts, WSS provides a welcoming place to do so. Our diverse community of volunteers comprises of former and current students, members of our atelier (studio space), staff and board of directors, and ranges in age from young adult to retiree.

Volunteers have the opportunity to support WSS in creating an accessible, diverse and welcoming institution for District-area residents with an interest in the arts. This can be done through the following volunteer opportunities:

PUBLIC PROGRAMS

Volunteers assist WSS staff with preparation, clean-up and staffing for public programs ranging from monthly exhibition opening receptions to large city-wide events such as Art All Night DC. WSS offers five annual events, the Big Draw and four Open Houses, which provide the public with free drawing opportunities. Volunteers help organize drawing materials, set-up classrooms and other relevant materials, in addition to greeting visitors and/or monitoring the classrooms during events.

ADMINISTRATIVE

WSS enlists four volunteers per term to cover the desk after the office has closed (5:30pm) and before evening classes begin (7pm). This person is responsible for sitting at the front desk and greeting students as they come in for evening classes. They also record any questions for the administrative staff to respond to the following day. WSS needs desk coverage in the evenings four days a week (Monday – Thursday) from 5:30pm – 7:30pm for the duration of our class terms (three ten week terms and one six-week term in the summer). Volunteers also have the opportunity to help organize the student area at the start and end of each term, as well as our upcoming art book resource library.

DEVELOPMENT

WSS seeks regular volunteers to assist with mailings, and outreach activities to our current students and target audiences.
