This exhibition highlights the work of Washington Studio School students, completed within the past couple of years. We notice a variety of approaches and experimentation, which is a reflection on the breadth of ideas that our faculty challenge the students with. The title of this exhibition is fact: Art is NOT decoration. Art is research, and endless learning. Art is challenge and failure. Art is growth. 

 

At the Washington Studio School we believe that drawing is the prerequisite foundation for all manners of thinking. As Milton Glazer once said “Drawing is thinking”. We honor that and use it as a base from which we venture into unknown territory. Our students are equipped with the  necessary tools and language to propel themselves onto unfamiliar ground where growth happens through discovery. WSS is not an academy. We don’t teach a “style” or a methodology. 

 

We teach students how to think. We see evidence of that thought process in this exhibition, from collage to drawing, to printmaking to painting. We see abstraction, design, representation and grid studies. All the work is made with intention and purpose. 

 

We hope you enjoy the work of our students as much as we have enjoyed witnessing their growth.
