Join our four-week intensive teen workshop this summer and work with practicing artists through various approaches to making art. The class will transition to a new focus each week starting with drawing, moving on to painting, printmaking, and cyanotypes as students get to experience studying under 4-5 different faculty members. Students will be divided into two groups, working on different floors, but will come together for lunch as well as critiques on Fridays. Additionally, the workshop will culminate in an exhibition of their work, whereby students will learn to curate and install their artwork in the school's gallery. On the final day of the workshop, WSS will host families for a gallery party.

Should you choose to participate in our Teen Program, a questionnaire will be emailed to you for your teen to fill out, expressing his/her/their intentions regarding joining the program.

A visual essay (a written essay will be accepted as well but visual is preferred) will also be required as preparation prior to the start of the program. This is to ensure that your teen is fully engaged in the program.

Limited needs-based scholarships are available.

Applications are submitted via the form linked below :

Work Time: 10am - 12:30pm

Lunch Break: 12:30- 1:30pm (students may bring lunch or walk to nearby carry-out places)

Work Time: 1:30pm - 4pm

Students will work from live models, classroom still-life set-ups, as well as outdoors when weather permits. Observational work will be the focus, but some work from imagination and memory will also be encouraged to tell personal stories. Each week builds on the previous week and skills are cumulative. The work of master and contemporary artists will be introduced alongside studio and materials skills.

All art supplies are provided. All students need to bring is a large portfolio (this can be a cardboard portfolio; the purpose is for artwork storage and transportation) and enthusiasm for making lots of art.

WSS is just a short walk from the Dupont Circle Red Line Metro Station.

The 2024 teen faculty are: Louis-Antoine Gilbert, Marie Gauthiez, Brian Kelley, and Mary Freedman.
