Opening Reception Saturday, October 3rd, 3-6pm 743 Maple Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90014 LAST CALL FOR AMERICA began as an open call centered on the American landscape, not simply as geography, but as image, mythology, and cultural construction. Artists were invited to consider the distance between the country we inhabit and the America that persists in the collective imagination. The postcard, the western, the highway, the national park, the endless horizon. A landscape made beautiful through representation even as the physical world beneath that representation is continually reorganized by industry, infrastructure, extraction, and capital. The original premise proposed that America increasingly relies on a dated image of itself, a mythology sustained through nostalgia built from ideas that no longer resemble reality. Otis Street Arts Project 3706 Otis St Mt. Ranier, MD 20712 Group show, Build Erase, curated by Liz Ashe. To Build (grow) and Erase (remove) is the root of how artists make decisions, how land masses shift, how erosion works, how one function requires the push and pull from another. “Build/Erase” is based on monochromatic aesthetics and the processes of addition and subtraction. How are artists taking the basic tenets of creation and communication – addition and subtraction, bright and dark, legible and illegible – and creating within this limited but also expansive idea? How can artists take an elegant and minimalist approach, and make something that the viewer stops in their tracks to look at? Ritual activities start small, build, and then dissipate. “America: The Innovation” examines innovation as a driving force in the United States, exploring technological breakthroughs, artistic movements and influential ideas across culture, education, science and society. Bringing together more than 30 artists from across the Northeast, it offers a fresh perspective on the American story through the lens of innovation and craft. Presented as part of the nation’s 250th-anniversary commemoration, the exhibition celebrates the spirit of creativity, ingenuity and progress that has shaped the American experience.
