Advanced* - 🖌️🖌️🖌️

Instructor: Paul Pietsch

Wednesday 6:30-9:30 pm, begins April 17

10 weeks, In-person / Room 2A

Building on the fundamental techniques of watercolor, this course is a practicum designed to help students transform their skills and vision into a sustained watercolor practice. The 10-week course will be structured around five painting challenges, with two weeks focused on each one. While it will reinforce core watercolor methods and introduce advanced techniques, the course will focus on strategic approaches to the medium and the individuality of problem-solving. Working from still lifes, figure models, and photographs, students will hone, among other things, their ability to mix colors; to build layers; to manage the fluidity of paint; to control edges; to create texture; and to plan compositions.

*Prerequisite: Any of Washington Studio School’s prior 10-week introductory level Watercolor courses or a similar amount of experience painting with watercolor that includes an understanding of the following concepts and techniques: three dimensions of color (hue, value, and chroma); cool and warm colors; glazes; flat, graduated, and variegated washes; dropping/charging in colors; blooms; and pulling an edge.
