This class is based on the principles of drawing, representation, and perceptual investigation. Through the use of charcoal, drawn lines, and cut-paper collages, students will explore ways of visually responding to subjects including still life and the human figure. Projects will include doing a series of variations of selected images utilizing a variety of collage source materials. In addition to pursuing a focus on the structural elements of composition and simplification, students will make new discoveries about color as a tool for expression and creating pictorial depth.  Skills in practice will include an understanding of rhythm, movement, and other visual dynamics through the very tactile medium of collage.

Subjects to be covered:

— Traditional tonal drawing

— Translating drawings into the medium of cut-paper collage

— Rapid exercises in the translation of image to shape

— Production of portraits in collage

— Mixed media synthesis of collaged shapes and drawn line
