Strengthen your grasp of the formal elements as you explore and develop your own personal language of drawing. Working from the model, students will learn to sharpen their powers of observation and challenge themselves to really SEE and learn how to better achieve volume, mass, gesture, gravity, spatial viability, and line quality on a flat plane. Each studentโs individual vision will be recognized, encouraged, and nurtured, with an emphasis on risk-taking, experimentation, and mark-making using a range of drawing/mixed media materials, all in pursuit of a personal aesthetic.
Each class will include quick gesture drawings, blind contours, and longer sustained poses. Multi-figure drawings will also be explored. We will look at and discuss the work of old masters and contemporary artists for inspiration and direction in each class. What questions do we ask ourselves as we work? Student critiques will serve an important role in identifying strengths and weaknesses in our drawings while we gain insight from each other, and share ideas and observations.
โDrawing is the basis of art. A bad painter cannot draw. But one who draws well can always paint.โ Arshile Gorky
